thumbnail Hello,

Although the Toffees secured the three points, the Spanish match-winner is in no doubt that his side were lucky and need to improve if they are to have a successful campaign

Mikel Arteta scored a last-minute penalty to win the match against Blackburn Rovers, but believes that was the only positive as he feels Everton's performance was not good enough and they need to step up a gear.

Everton were lucky not to lose the game as Blackburn failed to score from the penalty spot on two different occasions before the Spaniard stepped up to pinch three points from 12 yards out.

Arteta told Everton's official website: "The only positive we can take is that we took all three points, the performance wasn't good enough.

"We conceded too many chances to the opposition and we were lucky to win the game.

"We knew it was going to be a physical game and most of the afternoon we couldn't handle the pressure."

Everton lost their opening game of the season, at home to QPR, and the midfielder felt his side had to get a win under their belts.

"We needed the points, we know how important it is to get points early on in the season," added Arteta.

"We haven't been able to do that in the last few seasons and so it takes a bit of pressure off, it's two games in a row winning and we can take that positively.

"We've got a break now, two weeks with no football because of internationals but we must build on this and see how it goes."
