The Black Cats manager has made nine summer signings so far, but believes his most important ones could be the United duo, saying they are both “set to winning”
Bruce, who won three Premier League titles during a nine-year spell at Old Trafford, says the winning mentality instilled in the new Black Cats signings can only enhance his side's chances of having a successful season.
“They have the experience to handle the big occasion, It’s vital we added that,” Bruce was quoted as saying by The Times.
With a total of 10 Premier League winners' medals and three Champions League winners' medals between them, Bruce admits he did not think Sunderland would be able to attract the duo from United.
He continued: “We were talking about the big games coming up and Wes walked up and said, ‘Well, we should win those.’
“That’s him all over. He’s set to winning. The same applies to John. I didn’t think this club would be able to get two players like that who’ve played so many times for Manchester United.”
Brown, who has been capped 23 times by England, says although he enjoyed his time at Old Trafford, after making just seven Premier League appearances last season, his decision to move to Sunderland was not a difficult one.
“Moving hasn’t been difficult, just different. It helps knowing a few people and the set-up at Sunderland is superb. It felt right from the start," Brown said.
“I spoke to the boss, he told me which players he was going after and where we were looking to improve. I knew straightaway, even though there were a few other clubs interested, where I was going. In some ways this is my biggest season.
“I want to play. I didn’t play much last season. Wasn’t injured, just didn’t get picked. I missed it. I want to get back to it. Some people fall out of love with football as they get older, but I haven’t played as much as I want and I’ve got the same mentality as I always have.”
