The Spurs manager described the youngster as a 'great signing' and also praised Jordan Henderson ahead of the Sunderland midfielder's imminent move to Liverpool

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that he tried to sign Manchester United target Phil Jones.

Jones is expected to complete a medical today and sign a 5-year contract at the Old Trafford club for a fee in the region of £16 million.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Spurs manager said: “I think he’s an amazing young talent and he could easily go on and become an England centre-half in years to come.

“I was in for Phil Jones. We were interested in him but it looks like he’s gone to Manchester United,” admitted .

“I think he’s a great singing for Man United.

“We’re struggling to find people that are better than what we’ve got. It’s not easy unless you pay massive money and massive wages.”

Redknapp has also backed Jordan Henderson to be a success at Anfield.

Henderson is close to completing a £20m switch to Merseyside in the next 48 hours before he flies out to Denmark for the Under-21 European Championships.

“I’m sure Kenny’s [Dalglish] had his eye on him for a while and he’s a shrewd judge,” said Redknapp.

“He’s [Henderson] a good young player.

“If he thinks he’s worth the money then I wouldn’t want to argue with him.”
