Ex-Villans midfielder believes the Birmingham-based club would be better off retaining the services of the former Middlesbrough man instead of the Manchester United targetFormer Aston Villa winger Tony Morley insists he would rather keep Stewart Downing than Ashley Young, if that was what this summer's transfer dilemma came down to.
Both wide men have been linked with moves away from the club, with Young being touted to make a move to Manchester United.
Downing, for his part, has expressed a desire to play in the Champions League, whereas Villa are unable to offer him any form of European football.
"I personally, out of the two, would rather have Downing than Young," said Morley, according to the Birmingham Mail.
"I’m not saying that because one’s better than the other, just for the simple reason that Downing’s a better natural left-sided player.
"I know he plays on the right. But I personally think if Marc Albrighton improves in the next year or so he could do the job that Young’s doing on the wing and he’ll get crosses in.
"Every team needs a natural left-sided player and I think Downing’s ideal. I think he’s had a superb season and he can only get better."
