Serbian insists that the Belgian defender has 'done really well for us this season', but believes that the Red Devils' skipper still leads the pack in the Premier League
Manchester City's Aleksandar Kolarov claims that his team-mate Vincent Kompany can flourish as a defender and become as good as Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic.
Kompany has been a rock at the back for Roberto Mancini's side and was unlucky not be placed on the shortlist for this season's PFA Player of the Year.
Meanwhile, United's prized centre-back was among the nominations for the award and the two players will come together as they go head-to-head in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Serbian Kolarov, an international team-mate of Vidic, believes that his fellow City player has the potential to surpass the 29-year-old United captain.
"You have to remember that Vinnie [Kompany] is younger than Vidic," Kolarov told reporters.
"He has done really well for us this season.
"I'm lucky to be able to play alongside him and if he continues the way he is going he can be as good as Vidic."
Both Kolarov and Vidic were team-mates at Serbian side Red Star Belgrade, with the full-back emerging through the ranks whilst Vidic enjoyed time in the senior side and both left in 2004.
"I know Nemanja very well," Kolarov added.
"We play together in the national team but I have known him since he played for Red Star Belgrade.
"He's a great player, and I'm not just saying that because he's my friend.
"I know he is the United captain but I really do think he's the best defender in England.
"And if you are the best in the English league you are the best in Europe, in my opinion."
