thumbnail Hello,

Cristiano Ronaldo remains top dog of the transfer world

By Richard Parry

As night fell on the January transfer window, British football was on the crest of not only seeing its record transfer fee – Manchester City’s 2008 swoop for Robinho – eclipsed, but shattered twice, first by Andy Carroll’s switch to Liverpool, and then Chelsea’s barnstorming £50 million move for Fernando Torres.

Not only did the aforementioned bids dethrone the Brazilian from his lofty perch in terms of Premier League transfer history, but from the top 10 football transactions of all time as well. Impressive stuff indeed.

Torres, who signed for the Blues on a five-and-a-half year contract, leapt above Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo to become the fourth most expensive footballer in history, and the costliest Spaniard ever; while Carroll, at 22 years of age and with just 14 top flight goals to his name, leapfrogged Barcelona hitman David Villa into eighth place.

So while Roman Abramovich and John W Henry are left counting the pennies in their pockets, where do the Premier League’s latest blockbuster acquisitions rank in the top ten transfers of all time?
