Baggies boss keen to sign Italian on loan
The Italian forward has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford since the arrival of Javier Hernandez in the summer and has been told he can leave the club on loan in January, though the expectation was he would return to a club in his homeland.
Di Matteo has revealed that he attempted to sign the 19-year-old at the beginning of last season and now hopes he can secure his services for the remainder of this campaign.
He said: "Macheda is someone we looked at right at the start of last season. He's a striker, we are after a striker and we have to look at whether Manchester United will let him join us."
And with Pablo Ibanez, Steven Reid and Jonas Olsson all currently sidelined as well as Gabriel Tamas suspended, Di Matteo says he may also look to strengthen in defence.
He said: "We have to look at that possibility."
