Readers pick Frank Rijkaard as Liverpool's manager in January narrowly ahead of Hiddink, Dalglish & Benitez
Only Manuel Pellegrini receives fewer votes than current boss Hodgson
By Mark Hazell
Former Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard is the preferred option of Goal.com UK readers to be Liverpool's manager in January, although the choice is far from unanimous.
When Rafa Benitez’s reign at Anfield came to an end in this summer, Reds fans hoped new manager Roy Hodgson would be the man to lead the Merseyside club back to former glories. But just six months later, the former Fulham manager is running out of time to prove his worth at the five-time European champions.
A shock defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers last week left Liverpool languishing in 12th place in the table, with just 22 points from 18 games, and left many fans calling for Hodgson’s head. With the club's new owners, New England Sports Ventures, likely to be faced with an important decision to make our the club's future, we asked who you believe should be manager at Anfield come the opening of the January transfer window.
The results clearly showed the divide amongst fans. 20.86 per cent of Goal.com UK readers believe Rijkaard should replace Hodgson at the helm. The Dutchman did an excellent job of rebuilding a struggling Barcelona side around the prodigious talents of Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o, but could he have similar success at Anfield?
In second place, 17.51% of readers see Guus Hiddink as the right man for the job. Also from the Netherlands, Hiddink has Premier League experience after a successful temporary spell in charge of Chelsea, but is currently contracted to the Turkish national side
16.63% believe Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish should be the next man in charge. Dalglish made over 350 appearances for the Reds and also managed the Reds in the 1980s, so knows the club better than anyone. Already in a senior position within the club's hierarchy, he would be perfectly placed to make a seemless transition back to the dugout.
15.82% of readers think another former boss, Benitez, should return to Anfield. The Spaniard has recently left his position at Inter Milan and, of course, won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005. Surely a return is unlikely, however, so soon after his acrimonious exit from Merseyside?
Of the others, 11.91% favoured former Villa manager Martin O’Neill, 8.19% Frenchman Didier Deschamps whilst only Chilean Manuel Pellegrini received less of the vote (2.7%) than current incumbent Hodgson (with 2.48% voting for none of the available options) — indicating, if nothing else, that few would prefer the under-fire Englishman to remain at the club any longer.
