Birmingham City have had their latest approach for Liverpool forward Ryan Babel rejected, according to Sky Sports, with the report claiming Alex McLeish offered to take the Holland international on a six-month loan deal until the end of the season.

The Midlands-based club have seemingly been long-term admirers of Babel and tried to secure his services in a similar deal in last year’s January transfer window.

The rumours reignited in the summer with a host of Premier League sides being linked with the Dutchman, who has also recently been linked with a move to Inter.

Babel has struggled to make an impact since moving to Liverpool from Ajax and his contract only has 18 months left to run.

McLeish had recently hinted he was interested in signing Robbie Keane from Tottenham after distancing himself from rumours linking him with Aston Villa forward John Carew.

LA Galaxy forward Edson Buddle spent a week training at St Andrews earlier in the month and although McLeish said at the time Birmingham were “keeping the door open”, it seems their attentions have turned to other targets.
