Lee Bowyer admits draw against Manchester United is a bonus point for Birmingham City
Midfielder claims Blues are good enough to stay up
By Gill Clark
Birmingham City midfielder Lee Bowyer insisted his side fully deserved their draw with league leaders Manchester United, after bagging the late goal that secured a 1-1 win at St Andrew’s.
Dimitar Berbatov had opened the scoring for the visitors who looked set for another victory, until Bowyer popped until with only minutes remaining to snatch a draw for the Blues.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Bowyer admitted it was a “bonus point” that felt like a winner having scored so late.
“When you play the top sides and especially where you come from behind, especially here, it’s always an achievement,” he said.
“Where we are at the moment I don’t think it’s justice for the way we’ve been playing. It’s definitely a bonus point.”
The midfielder also insisted his side had fully deserved their hard-earned point despite struggling to work goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for much of the game.
“We didn’t really create many chances. We were huffing and puffing but I think there was a lot of balls in midfield, obviously we only played one up front,” he added.
“I think we deserved it, we worked really hard, they had a lot of possession in the second half but I think we deserved to nick a goal at the end.”
The draw moves Birmingham up into 16th position in the table and Bowyer is adamant his side can beat the drop adding: “We know we are good enough, we know we need to just put a little run together.”
Birmingham face a tricky test next time out with Arsenal, fresh from their 3-1 victory over Chelsea, the next visitors to St Andrews on New Years’ Day.
