Fabregas hails 'mentally' important victory
Alex Song opened the scoring in the first half before goals from Walcott and Cesc Fabregas handed Arsenal a 3-0 lead. Branislav Ivanovic grabbed a goal back but it was not enough for the Blues who slumped to yet another defeat.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Walcott highlighted his side’s defensive display but warned his team must continue their form against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday night.
“We just concentrated on our defensive side of our game, you know pressing, everyone was pressing today, it was so good to see,” he explained.
“Not just the players who started, but the ones who came on as well, they pressed, we didn’t give Chelsea space at all and we did that throughout the 90 minutes. We got the win and that’s fantastic but there’s another game around the corner now.”
Walcott also admitted he was pleased to win for the fans who have seen their team struggle against the Blues in recent seasons.
“I think everything went well for us tonight, we made Chelsea look average at times, we played some great football, not just the pressing,” he added.
“It was fantastic to see and we wanted to do that for the fans because in recent years we’ve been disappointing and we haven’t got the results but tonight hopefully we showed the fans what we can do.”
Captain Cesc Fabregas also admitted that the win was an important “mental” victory for the Gunners after a welcome win against one of their title rivals.
“Mentally I think it’s very important but we have to show that again on Wednesday [against Wigan], the Premier League, the best league in the world, the most competitive, after today we have to play again,” he said.
“I’ve always said that’s the difference between a good team and a great team is very little. Today we did what a great team does. We had everything, we were fantastic.”
