Aston Villa striker John Carew is close to signing a deal for rivals West Bromwich Albion in the New Year, according to reports.

Villa have decided to cash in on Carew in January instead of waiting until his contract runs out, after which he could leave for nothing, and have their own targets such as Tottenham's Robbie Keane and Pablo Osvaldo of Espanyol, according to the Daily Mail.

Carew snubbed a move to Birmingham City, and also left Fulham manager Mark Hughes disappointed after rejecting his advances. However, Hughes retains his interest in CFR Cluj's Lacina Traore and Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz.

Carew, 31, has been at Villa Park for almost four years, scoring 52 goals in 132 appearances, but has yet to hit the net this season.

He has not been used often since Houllier took charge of Villa in September. Houllier has received interest from Leicester for a loan deal for forward Emile Heskey, but he is said to only be considering permanent deals for the striker.
