Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has confirmed he is in the market for a new striker in January, following reports that Tottenham’s Robbie Keane is on his wish list.

The Republic of Ireland international has found first team opportunities hard to come by this season, making just six Premier League appearances.

McLeish is reportedly ready to offer Spurs £6 million for the striker in January, but faces competition from rivals Aston Villa for his signature.

Although McLeish has not made known of his interest in Keane, who has been told he can leave White Hart Lane, he is on the lookout for a new forward having seen his side score just 17 league goals this season.

He told the Daily Mail: "I'm going to be working with the board to bring enhancement to the forward area. That's a priority.

"We want to enhance our assault on the second half of the season. I have a fast and athletic forward in Cameron Jerome and I have a tall forward with Nikola Zigic.

"I'm now looking for someone with a bit of guile and craft and I've identified that type of player."
