Aston Villa are the latest Premier League side to enter the race for Middlesbrough’s David Wheater, according to Sky Sports.

The 23-year-old is out of contract in the summer and will be available on a free transfer as he turns 24 in February.

The young defender will have no shortage of suitors should he choose to leave Teesside, with the likes of Stoke City, Everton and Newcastle United all thought to be interested in his services.

Middlesbrough have said that they want to keep hold of the defender, who has earned a call up to the England squad under Fabio Capello, but the lure of Premier League football could be hard for Wheater to resist.
