Los Angeles Galaxy will not allow Everton target Landon Donovan to leave on loan this winter

U.S. international to rest after MLS season
Landon Donovan will not head out on a third consecutive loan deal during the Major League Soccer offseason, the Los Angeles Galaxy announced.

Over the past two years Donovan has filled the lengthy layoff between MLS seasons with stints at Bayern Munich and Everton, but will continue to rest and prepare for the 2011 season come January.

“While I enjoyed my time at Everton last season and still appreciate all the support their fans have given me, I feel that it is important to continue to rest and recover this offseason as opposed to going on loan,” Donovan said.

“I never considered being loaned to a club other than Everton, but I have been playing nearly non-stop for the past two years and I believe that this decision will allow me to perform at my best for the Galaxy and the national team throughout the upcoming year.

"I look forward to re-joining my Galaxy team-mates for the start of pre-season training next month and beginning our quest for another MLS Cup championship.”

The 28-year-old spoke frequently down the stretch of the 2010 season of both a physical and mental exhaustion that came after competing in the World Cup for the United States.

The Galaxy captain maintained that he would make any decision about a loan only after the season finished and he could properly assess his recovery.

The 50-odd games for club and country last year appear to have taken their toll, meaning Donovan will recharge rather than head to Europe for 10 weeks.

"We think in the best interest of the club and the player that Landon continues his post-season break and begins preparations for what will be a challenging year in 2011 at both the domestic and international levels,” Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena said.

“We expect Landon to join our club for the start of preseason training next month as we begin to prepare for the 2011 MLS season.”

On Monday, Donovan was named the U.S. player of the year for a record fourth time.
