Benoit Assou-Ekotto: I want to stay at Tottenham for life

Left-back reveals Spurs players didn't recognise him after being sidelined
Benoit Assou-Ekotto has expressed his desire to stay at Tottenham for the rest of his career.

The left-back has enjoyed a prominent role under Harry Redknapp after moving to the club from French side Lens in 2006.

The Cameroon international’s early career at Spurs was blighted by injury but the 26-year-old has admitted he would welcome the opportunity to stay at White Hart Lane.

"I want to stay at Spurs for life,” Assou-Ekotto told the News of the World.

"I would have signed for six years! I love playing in the Premier League, it's the best league in the world. Why would I want to play anywhere else?

"Team spirit here is exceptional under Harry [Redknapp].”

Assou-Ekotto also believes his lengthy spell on the sidelines acted as a motivational tool when he was given an opportunity in the team and revealed when he came back from injury, his team-mates did not recognise him.

"When you are out for 18 months, people forget about you," said Assou-Ekotto.

"When I eventually returned some of my team-mates did not know who I was. Alan Hutton asked Jermaine Jenas, 'Who's this?'

"Nobody remembered me, but it made me hungrier to establish myself as a first-team regular."
Assou-Ekotto is currently 527th in the Castrol Rankings, down from 518th in October.
