Everton manager David Moyes has admitted to making a mistake by giving Jermaine Beckford such a prominent role in the Toffees set-up so early in to his career at the club.
The 26-year-old started four of the club's opening five games this season and has scored just three goals in 14 appearances since his move from Leeds United in the summer.
However, Beckford came off the bench to score against Chelsea at the weekend in a widely lauded performance, and Moyes feels that he should have employed this tactic from the start of the striker's time at Goodison Park.
He said: "This is the route I should have taken. I put him in the team too early.
"Games in the Premier League open up more 15 or 20 minutes from the end and Jermaine can exploit that."
