Rafa Benitez is set to make a trip back to Merseyside as he eyes up Everton’s Steven Pienaar for an Inter move.
The Daily Mirror reported that the former Liverpool boss is to make a cut price raid to snap up the South African international.
The 26-year-old’s contract will be up at the end of the season and his club have accepted the possibility they will be losing him as a free agent.
As Pienaar refused to sign a new contract, the transfer window looks like it will attract a lot of interest from the Toffees, as well as a strong likelihood the midfielder will be up for grabs also.
Benitez has never been popular with the Evertonians in Liverpool, and it looks like he will fall even further in favour. Another club interested in Pienaar is Tottenham, with Harry Redknapp making no qualms about being a fan of the former Ajax midfielder.
David Moyes’s club know that the Italian club may make an offer in January and he may lose a player to the reigning European champions.
The Everton boss apparently values Pienaar as a £10 million player, but he is aware that he may barely get half of that in the event he is sold.
However, knowing he can get a better contract if he sees out his current deal, Pienaar’s decision may hinge on whether Inter and other clubs can push for the move.
The midfielder moved to Everton in the 2007/8 season and is currently the club’s Player of the Season after his efforts last year.
