TEAM NEWS: England hopefuls Andy Carroll and Adam Johnson both on the bench as Newcastle United face Manchester City

Hughton opts for Ameobi over young striker
Manchester City and Newcastle United have both dropped potential England squad members ahead of their clash at Eastlands.

City winger Adam Johnson, who scored against Juventus in the Europa League on Thursday, returns to the bench as manager Roberto Mancini makes just two changes to the side that beat Chelsea, with Jerome Boateng and Joleon Lescott both featuring in City's defence at full-back.

Mancini's opposite number Chris Hughton has left out England Under-21 striker Andy Carroll  meanwhile, preferring to play Shola Ameobi as a lone striker as the Magpies travel to Eastlands.

There is also no place for winger Wayne Routledge as Hughton starts with Jonas Gutierrez and Hatem Ben Arfa, who has impressed since his recent arrival at the club.
