George Graham: Arsenal will win nothing with Manuel Almunia in goal
Gunners need a new goalkeeper...
By Zack Wilson
Former Arsenal manager George Graham has pinpointed Manuel Almunia as the reason the Gunners will struggle once again to end their ongoing trophy drought this season.
The Spaniard was guilty of another unsteady display at the Emirates on Saturday as the Gunners lost to West Bromwich Albion, and Graham thinks that Arsene Wenger must make a new goalkeeper a priority.
"I think if you're going to really be realistic challengers for the Premier League you need a top, top-class goalkeeper," said Graham, according to The Sun.
"I think Almunia is a good goalkeeper but there's about half a dozen good goalkeepers in the Premier League.
"Arsenal need an outstanding goalkeeper. I think they should be looking all round the world, not just in England or Europe."
Wenger himself refused to single out Almunia's performance fo censure after the game, insisting that the team must bear collective responsibility for the defeat to the Baggies.
"I do not want to comment on any individual performances because we were collectively poor," he said.
"You could single out a few players who have made mistakes. We made it more difficult because we were not at our usual level.
"Not defensively, not offensively. Overall, everything was difficult for us - passing the ball, winning the ball back, winning the one against ones - and we got what we deserved which was zero points.
"We didn't deserve more. The positive is that we did fight until the last minute but it was not good enough to get three points.
"It is the first really bad performance and it is unexplainable how bad the whole thing looked for the whole game.
"I didn't recognise my team out there and we have to sit down together to analyse what happened. Something is unexplainable in such a poor performance."
