Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper out for 12 weeks after undergoing surgery on shoulder injury

Hughton branded collision with Beckford as 'unnecessary'
Newcastle United have confirmed that their first-choice goalkeeper Steve Harper will face 12 weeks on the sidelines after successful surgery on his shoulder injury.

The 35-year-old was badly injured at Goodison Park on Saturday after Everton striker Jermaine Beckford collided with him, resulting in the goalkeeper to land heavily on his shoulder, damaging ligaments.

A statement on the official Newcastle United website read: "Following a shoulder ligament injury sustained in United's game against Everton on Saturday.

"Steve Harper has undergone a successful operation yesterday.

"It is likely that Steve will be unavailable for selection for a period of around 12 weeks."

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has voiced his disdain at the collision with Beckford, calling it unnecessary.

"I thought it was a challenge that didn't need to have been made," Hughton told the BBC. "Steve Harper was always getting there first."
