Gaffer to assess striker upon his return from international duty...Sunderland boss Steve Bruce hopes to give new signing Asamoah Gyan his Premier League baptism on Saturday, when his side travel to play Wigan Athletic.
The 24-year-old was signed from Rennes on deadline day, after a fee believes to be in excess of £13 million had been agreed between the two clubs. However, upon arrival at the Stadium of Light, the striker was called away on international duty to play for Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The former Wigan Athletic boss believes that he will give the forward a run out against the Latics, should he show some semblance of fitness following the long journey back to England.
"I've got to wait for him to get back from international duty to see how he is," Bruce told the Evening Chronicle.
"It's a long trip from Ghana and I will check on his condition when he walks through the door.
"But if he is OK, there's every chance he will be involved at some stage at Wigan."
Gyan is expected to meet his new team-mates for the first time on Thursday.
