Aston Villa board member Charles Krulak: Fans' criticism of Gerard Houllier reflects badly on the club

Give the man a little respect, says board member...

Gerrard Houllier - manager of Lyon
Aston Villa board member General Charles C. Krulak has called on fans of the club to show more respect to Gerard Houllier, amid reports that the Birminghham-based outfit are set to appoint the former Liverpool boss as Martin O'Neill's successor.

The Ulsterman left Villa Park only days before the season began, following a disagreement with owner Randy Lerner. Kevin MacDonald was then appointed as the caretaker boss until a permanent replacement could be found, with recent reports pointing towards an imminent appointment.

A portion of the club's fans have not been impressed with the club being strongly linked with the Frenchman, amid reports that he could have agreed a two-year deal to become the next manager.

"Whatever anyone thinks of him, he deserves respect from the fans of this club," General Krulak is quoted by The Times as telling a fans' message board.

"He has a fine record with multiple clubs and deserves better for the amount of effort he has put into his chosen career than to be ridiculed by AVFC.

"And that is just one person, who has been taken apart on the three sites I post on. We are bigger than that. As I have said many times, we can disagree all we want, but we should do it respectfully.

"It makes little sense to me to pick out one or two candidates and run threads on how much we don't want them or how bad they would be for the club.

"Any manager worth his salt is going to do some due diligence on the club and that would probably include reading up on the fans and the type of support they might receive."
