Aston Villa are believed to be delaying the appointment of Gerard Houllier as they fear an adverse reaction from the club's players.

The managerial vacancy at the Birmingham-based club was first created when Martin O'Neill left the club five days before the start of the season, following a disagreement with owner Randy Lerner.

Since then, Kevin MacDonald has been appointed on a temporary basis, as the club were on the lookout to find a permanent replacement.

However, since taking the helm at Villa - albeit as a caretaker boss - the 49-year-old has thrown his hat into the ring to be handed the permanent role at the club.

Recent reports point towards the club bringing in former Liverpool boss Houllier, who in turn is thought to favour having Phil Thompson - his right-hand man during his days at Anfield - link up with him again, this time under the claret-and-blues' banner.

Now The Mirror claims that the players are fiercely loyal to MacDonald, and could pose problems if the Scot were to be alienated by the potential arrival of Houllier and Thompson.

In the meantime, there have also been reports suggesting Thompson has rejected the chance to join the Frenchman at Villa Park, adding another stumbling block to a potential deal.
