Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be in line to make a move for Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Young when the transfer window reopens in January.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the former Watford man throughout the summer, but were unable to land him as the transfer window came to a close.

The north London club were previously reported to have put forward a player swap deal that would have seen striker Robbie Keane move the other way, but it is thought that the two clubs were unable to come to an understanding as the Birmingham-based club were without a permanent manager following the sudden exit of Martin O'Neill.

Now talkSPORT claims that Spurs are in line to cough-up up to £22 million to secure the services of Young, while retaining hope that they could also dispose of excess baggage by making Robbie Keane and Jermaine Jenas part of the bid.

It has also been reported that Tottenham are ready to hand the winger a five-year contract at £65,000-a-week at White Hart Lane, but Young is said to want better terms.
