Gerard Houllier wants former Liverpool coach Phil Thompson as his assistant at Aston Villa - report
Gerard Houllier is contemplating working alongside his former number two at Liverpool, Phil Thompson should he be appointed Aston Villa's new manager, according to a report from The Daily Express.
Thompson was Houllier's assistant at Liverpool for six years, and was at the Frenchman's side when the Reds completed a memorable cup treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001.
The former England defender won a host of honours as a player at Anfield, and captained the Reds until being succeeded by Graeme Souness.
Thompson has been working as a pundit for much of the time since leaving his coaching post at Liverpool in 2004.
