Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel and full-back Stephen Warnock are reportedly unhappy with rumors that the club want to appoint former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier as the new manager at Villa Park.

Both Friedel and Warnock endured a difficult time at Anfield under the French coach.

Friedel was sold by the Frenchman to Blackburn Rovers in 1999, while Warnock was sent on loan to Coventry City and both players are now eager to see Houllier's name banished from the candidate list for the Villa Park hotseat.

A Villa source told the News of the World said: "When it was revealed Houllier was the favourite for the Villa, it went down like a lead balloon with a couple of the players. You can't underestimate the strength of feeling, especially of someone such as Brad Friedel who felt he had no relationship with Houllier when he was at Anfield."

And it seems that the players are ready to hold talks with the Villa hierarchy in order to avoid Houllier's arrival.

The former Lyon manager returned to England yesterday to attend Jamie Carragher's testimonial at Anfield.

When questioned about the possibility of taking the job, Houllier refused to rule out the move.

"Never and always are the two words you can't use in football," he said.

Houllier is currently technical director of the French Football Federation.
