Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is keeping his lips sealed over gathering speculation linking him with the vacant Aston Villa manager's position.

Houllier is one of the favourites to take over at Villa Park after Martin O’Neill resigned from the role before the start of the season.

Houllier, 63, is currently a technical director for the French Football Federation and speculation is intensifying over what position he would fill at Villa Park, ranging from the manager's job to a director of football post.

The Frenchman's last managerial post in England was with Liverpool which saw him lead the Merseysiders to a cup treble in 2001 consisting of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup. Jamie Carragher was part of that treble winning team, hence Houllier's latest return to England for the Liverpool veteran's testimonial on Saturday.

Houllier would not confirm or deny on the rumours over his future although, according to Press Association Sport, he said: "Never and always are two words you can't use in football."

Following his departure from English football he returned to his homeland and managed French Ligue 1 side Lyon from 2005 until 2007.
