Roberto Martinez backing new signing Franco Di Santo to succeed at Wigan Athletic

Boss claims signing shows long-term ambition...

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is confident that he can help new signing Franco Di Santo fulfill his potential.

The Argentine forward, who moved to the DW Stadium on a three-year deal, has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League, both at Stamford Bridge and during a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers last season, but Martinez is delighted to have signed the player on a long-term deal.

"It is exciting because in any loan situation you do not have the bigger picture and the long-term ambition," said Martinez.

"It is not just a matter of getting him up to speed and then losing at the end of a 12-month period.

"It is important that from all the young players we are developing here, we get rewards.

"To have Franco here as a permanent player is a great signing for us, as we can really focus on his development and fulfilling his potential so Wigan can get the rewards."

Wayne Veysey reports from Craven Cottage: “Welcome from a gloriously sunlit Craven Cottage, where conditions are like an alpine ski resort - bright and chilly in equal measure.  We still await official team news, although I'm told that Matthew Upson has won the battle of the centre-backs ahead of Jonathan Woodgate and will partner Ryan Shawcross in the absence of the suspended Robert Huth. Up front, we are expecting a strike force aggregating a combined 13ft, with Kenwyne Jones set to partner Peter Crouch.”

Despite a brief turn of pace and instant Liverpool attack through Craig Bellamy, it really is all Manchester United at Old Trafford. This time it’s Antonio Valencia who looks to add a third after making a run inside from the right, but Jose Enrique gets in front of the winger to hack Ryan Giggs’ cross away.
