Javier Mascherano has slammed Liverpool for their broken promises and "lies" about the reasons behind his Barcelona switch.

Mascherano, 26, completed his move to the Primera Division champions shortly before transfer deadline day after telling manager Roy Hodgson of his intention to quit the club after returning from World Cup 2010.

Rumours had appeared that his wife's unhappiness on Merseyside had been behind the transfer. Speaking to The Mirror, Mascherano angrily revealed Liverpool's failure to stick to a vow from a year ago as the real reason.

He said: "They'd promised me something for a whole year and they never fulfilled their promise. And that didn't have anything to do with my family or anything else.

"When you read or hear lies, you obviously get angry.

"When they started to involve my family and to say things that didn't make sense, I obviously suffered."
