Alan Curbishley has entered the race to become the new Aston Villa manager, according to the Daily Mail.

The former Charlton Athletic and West Ham United boss was reportedly interviewed for the post on Tuesday, joining reserve team coach Kevin MacDonald in being in contention for the job.

MacDonald has been in charge as caretaker manager the first three Premier League games of the season and two Europa League qualifying ties, but he has had mixed success.

He has won two home games in the league but lost their only away game against Newcastle United 6-0, and they were also knocked out of Europe over two legs by Rapid Vienna of Austria.

Curbishley fits the club's desire for someone with Premier League experience having established Charlton as a top-flight club and then keeping West Ham United in the Premier League while having to sell players.

Curbishley won a case of constructive dismissal against West Ham after parting company when several players were sold without his permission.

The 52-year-old also played for Villa in 1983 and made 36 appearances for the club.

Other managers linked with the vacancy include former AZ boss and Dutch international Ronald Koeman and Everton manager David Moyes.
