Manchester United missed chance to sign Bebe for £125,000 in January, reveals former coach

Striker could have been snapped up for a snip of final £7.4m fee...

Manchester United could have signed Portuguese forward Bebe for €150,000 (£125,000) last January, according to the coach of the player's former club.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson signed the player this summer for £7.4 million from Vitoria Guimaraes, and subsequently admitted having never actually seen him play.

But now the ex-coach of Estrela da Amadora, Bebe's former club, has revealed that the player was being touted round Europe just six months earlier, as the club struggled to stave off a winding up order.

"Last season we had no money at all. We were trying to transfer Bebe to other clubs. We had to raise money desperately," revealed former Estrela coach Jorge Paxaio, speaking to the Daily Mail.

"We told everyone in England and in Europe: 'For €150,000 you can have him'. We couldn’t get anybody interested. Nobody trusted him. None of the clubs were interested because he had never played at a high level.

"I was surprised with the sudden way it happened with United. I was hoping he would move to a bigger club in Portugal or to a medium-sized club in Europe. I didn’t expect Manchester United.

"Having said this, Manchester United have signed an extraordinary player."

A former agent of Bebe's confirmed that United could have snapped up the player on the cheap last season, although they weren't the only club to spurn the chance to do so.

"Bebe would have been very cheap during last season and then we tore up the contract because he wasn’t being paid by Estrela and so then he was free," Bebe’s former agent Goncalo Reis explained.

"A scout from United could have contacted me or the club last season. There was no secret. But I understand that the United scout just saw certain games in Portugal and only realised Bebe was a great player when he saw some pre-season games involving Guimaraes.

"If they had looked wider they would have seen him earlier and paid very little. But everyone was the same."

MANCHESTER UNITED GOAL: Right place, right time - 1-0 United. Wayne Rooney finds himself unmarked six yards out to coolly finish past Pepe Reina after Jordan Henderson’s attempted headed clearance from a corner arrives straight at the feet of the striker. That should liven the action up on the field good and proper.
