Barcelona new boy Javier Mascherano: I owe former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez a lot
Argentine hails Merseyside mentor...
By Zack Wilson
Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano has revealed he owes a debt of gratitude to Inter boss Rafael Benitez, who was a major influence on him while the two worked together at Liverpool.
Although both men's time at Anfield came to somewhat acrimonious ends, Mascherano maintains that Benitez taught him much on Merseyside, having rescued him from a difficult situation at West Ham United.
Mascherano claims that the Spaniard gave him some useful lessons in tactics and formation that he will take into his future career.
"Rafa taught me tactics," Mascherano said, according to The Guardian.
"He's one of the coaches who have taught me the most in my career and I'm very grateful to him.
"He was fundamental. He gave me the chance to join Liverpool.
"He had confidence in me at a time when, perhaps, nobody would have dreamed of giving me an opportunity. I'll be grateful to him all my life."
