Finances prevented West Ham United from buying Everton's Yakubu & ex-Portsmouth skipper Marc Wilson - report
West Ham United failed to sign former Portsmouth captain Marc Wilson and Everton striker Yakubu owing to a brittle state of finances, according to The Guardian.
It is believed that £5 million would have fetched the Nigerian from Goodison Park, with £3m being the price that would have lured the 23-year-old defender, who has since sealed a switch to Stoke City,
from his former employers.
The Hammers were believed to have been on the market to strengthen the squad following three losses from as many games in the Premier League, which has left the east London club at the rock bottom of the table.
The arrival of current title holders Chelsea next Saturday means that the claret and blues could go up to mid-September without opening their point scoring account.
Chelsea are also yet to concede a goal in the Premier League.
