Rio Ferdinand is set to make his first appearance since his World Cup 2010 injury nightmare by turning out for Manchester United reserves tonight.

The 31-year-old Three Lions captain was forced to pull out of the England squad after damaging knee ligaments in the first training session on South African soil.

After originally being expected to be out until the end of this month, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been boosted by the return of his star centre-back.

Ferdinand is joined by fellow long-term absentees Anderson and Wes Brown in the starting team for the Manchester Senior Cup clash against Oldham Athletic's second string.

If he comes through the fixture unscatched, he could be available for the the Premier League meeting with Everton on September 11.

Manchester United lineup: Devlin, W Brown, Gill, Wootton, Ferdinand, de Laet, Macheda, Anderson, Cofie, Eikrem, Ajose. Subs: R Brown, Coll, Tunnicliffe, Lingard.
