Wigan Athletic and Blackpool have entered the race to sign David Nugent from Portsmouth, according to a report from Sky Sports News.

The Latics are apparently keen to seal a deal for the player before the transfer window slams shut later today, while newly promoted Blackpool are keen to bolster their forward line.

Nugent joined Pompey from Preston North End in 2007, but has struggled to make an impact at Fratton Park.

He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Burnley last season and has appeared keen to move elsewhere in his search for first team football.

Portsmouth have a shortage of players at the moment and are bottom of the Championship, which may affect their willingness to allow Nugent to leave.

Meanwhile, another Portsmouth forward attracting attention from elsewhere is John Utaka.

The 28-year-old is in the last year of his reported £80,000 a week contract, and Pompey are keen to cash in on him to ease the financial burden at the club.

Championship outfits Leicester City and Queens Park Rangers are understood to have made enquiries about the forward.

Utaka has hit just seven goals in 66 games since joining Pompey for £7 million in 2007.
