Newcastle United are reportedly plotting an £8 million splurge to acquire the services of Utrecht striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

The 21-year-old's claim to fame came on the European stage recently, when he scored a superb hat-trick that saw SPL giants Celtic being dumped out of the Europa League.

Now The Mirror reports that the Tyneside club are set to launch an £8m bid to bring in the young forward, who has been touted to be a hot prospect for the future.

The versatile forward can play up front, or as an attacking midfielder with equal ease. He has also represented Netherlands at Under-19 and U-20 levels, and recently earned his first cap with the senior national squad in a friendly against Ukraine.

See, this is the kind of story for which I get up in the morning. Bayern Munich have said that they are willing to offer an honorary membership to ... the Pope. Yes, that Pope. Pope Benedict XVI.

I can't help wondering if the big man upstairs might be implicated in some kind of match-influencing scandal if that goes through ... Either way, it's glorious. After announcing the "bomb" signing of 13 million Facebook fans rather than a star striker in January, it looks like the Bavarians are actively trying to sign every single person in the world who isn't a professional footballer. Good for them. I'm available, by the way.

Oooh, well. Here's a topic that we can expect to hear a lot more of in the next few weeks and months - Robin van Persie's future. The flying Dutchman (aren't I original?) has less than 18 months to run on his contract now - is he going to become the latest Samir Nasri and leave Arsenal almost by default?

Well, former Real Madrid head honcho (though since tossed out of the club by Hurricane Mourinho) Jorge Valdano has been offering his thoughts on the striker's future, suggesting that Van Persie "is needed more at Barcelona" than at Madrid. Could the Gunners' talisman be on his way to Camp Nou for a reunion with Cesc Fabregas? Would he even get into that ridiculously-talented team? Click 'read more' to check out what Valdano has to say.

Andy Stanley on Twitter: "I think Sessegnon could well grab a goal or 2 against Arsenal but i'm hoping that the star of the weekend is Bale with a hat-trick"

Tottenham could certainly do with reminding Harry Redknapp of a few reasons to stay at White Hart Lane, couldn't they? The Newcastle defence will have to reproduce their excellent early-season form to keep the Welsh winger out. That really is a huge match that's flying under the radar with all the talk of Manchester United and Liverpool.

Now, plenty of fun was had yesterday as we pondered what Fabio Capello's exit from England might mean for managers around Europe. Well, Goal.com's resident cartoonist, the fabulous Omar Momani, has taken things to their logical conclusion in his Cartoon of the Day.

I'm assuming Omar just didn't have enough ink to draw Kevin Keegan and Ian Holloway sharing the England horse.
