Birmingham City have confirmed contract talks with Wigan Athletic’s Charles N'Zogbia have broken down.
The French midfielder was set to move to St Andrew’s for a club-record fee but the two parties failed to settle on personal terms, which has subsequently scuppered any potential deal.
"We did everything that was asked of us and then the goalposts were moved at the last minute," City boss Alex McLeish told the club’s official website.
"It was very important to us as a club to stick to our principles and look after the long-term interests of Birmingham City as we are custodians of the club.
"We remain ambitious and committed to adding extra quality to the playing squad but this deal became one that was not in the interests of the club.
"The board worked with me extremely hard to try and get this one over the line and I thank them for their support."
N'Zogbia had been linked with a move away from the DW Stadium during pre-season and Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has previously criticised McLeish for declaring an interest in his player.
After having their first bid rejected, City’s improved second offer was accepted but the 24-year-old has reportedly demanded wages that are not within the Blues' budget.
