Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy has revealed he wanted to bring Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll to Molineux last season.

Carroll, who has been in impressive form for the Magpies in their opening two Premier League matches of the season, was a target for the Wolves boss while the Toon Army were in the Championship.

The 21-year-old has already scored a hat-trick in last week’s 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa, and came close to finding the net during the Magpies' opening fixture against Manchester United.

"I thought Andy Carroll was excellent at Old Trafford. I know he missed a header but I thought he worked really hard and put a shift in," McCarthy told reporters.

"Then against Aston Villa he was outstanding. He is fabulous in the air, runs the channels and scores goals.

"He's a young lad learning his trade."

McCarthy admits his admiration of the player but reveals that Wolves had no realistic chance of snatching the striker from St James' Park.

"I saw him at Preston when he was out on loan and we asked about him," said McCarthy.

"We asked about him last year. We didn't get close at all. We made a bid but it didn't get anywhere.

"He's at a good club with the No.9 on his back. I'm sure he is loving it because he is a Newcastle lad.

"They have got a young local lad coming through who can play."
