Real Madrid have handed Liverpool an instant replacement for wantaway midfielder Javier Mascherano by offering Mahamadou Diarra, according to skysports.com.

Diarra, 29, is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu after the arrival of Germany World Cup 2010 star Sami Khedira. The Mali international has struggled for form and fitness since joining from Lyon in 2006 but remains highly rated.

Mascherano is poised for the exit door as Barcelona attempt to agree a fee and Diarra's cheap price could appeal to the Anfield outfit as Roy Hodgson seeks to renovate his squad.
