Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong insists consistency is key in title challenge this season

Nigel de Jong has declared his Manchester City side must keep up the standard from Monday's victory against Liverpool to mount a Premier League title challenge.

The Blues claimed an impressive 3-0 victory after an early strike from Gareth Barry and a brace from Carlos Tevez. After another summer of huge spending, the result went some way to showing the cash could be turned into trophies.

Speaking to the club's official website, De Jong urged his colleagues not to rest on their laurels.

He said: "As a midfield, I thought we played well as a unit.

"James Milner had a fine debut, Gareth Barry scored a good goal, and Yaya [Toure] and I did what we do.

"I think anyone would agree we have enough quality in our whole team to be challenging. Now what we have to show is that we have the mentality too.

"We want to win this league - that's the ambition - but to do that we have to hit these standards every week."

Despite being a first team regular for both Manchester City and the Netherlands, De Jong is rated as just the 534th best player in the top five leagues in Europe in the Castrol Rankings’ study of European football.

Another former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson has also had his say on the matter in an interview with the BBC: "I think Redknapp would be a very, very good choice. He's English, he knows his football, there are no doubts about that. He is doing a great job with Tottenham and he's been doing a great job with every team he's had in the past, so I would say yes it would be him." Pretty definitive stuff, that.

Time for some reaction from a former England manager, and we've got Graham Taylor telling the BBC about the likelihood of Harry Redknapp getting the post: "Should the FA wish to offer him the England manager's job it's a clear path for them. I think it's likely after the European Championship. Harry Redknapp is well in line to become the next England manager, and now that his innocence has been proved I fully expect it to happen."

More reaction on whether Harry Redknapp is now assured of the England job courtesy of former FA executive director David Davies, who told the BBC: "If you had a poll of all the football supporters in the country, Harry would be the overwhelming top choice for the job. But there are a few other strong candidates, who are also English, and one or two who aren't as well." I think there may be a few Tottenham fans prepared to sabotage that poll if it ever came to fruition.
