thumbnail Hello,

No offer from the Blaugrana for coveted Argentine...

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has denied reports that the La Liga giants have reached an agreement to sign Javier Mascherano from Liverpool.

The legendary Barca figurehead claims the Argentina international midfielder, who wants a move away from Anfield this summer, ‘does not fit into the club’s season plan’.

Earlier this week various sources in Spain speculated that a deal had been struck with the Premier League side, with former Arsenal playmaker Aliaksandr Hleb a makeweight in the transfer.

However,
Zubizaretta vehemently denies that the Blaugrana are interested in securing the defensive midfielder's services.

“There is still nothing with [Javier] Mascherano, in fact he is a player who does not fit into our season plan," Zubizarreta told Spanish publication Sport.

“He is a great player, but there is nothing.”

Zubizaretta also refused to comment on reports that Swedish hit-man Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be set for a move away from the Camp Nou, just twelve months after his big-money switch from Serie A champions Inter.

“[Ibrahimovic] is an important player in our squad and has scored an important goal [versus Sevilla, in the Supercopa first leg]," he added.

“He has proven to be a great player and has great quality.”

The goalkeeping legend also stressed that the younger players who were involved in the 3-1 Supercopa loss to Sevilla will be given plenty of opportunities to shine, despite the defeat.

He concluded: “The team has the same shape and the same style as always. We see that there are good people in every position, showing the personality and the quality to meet these challenges. The first game is always difficult.”
