thumbnail Hello,

Poll suggests Shay Given should leave if unhappy...

Following his heroic display against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League curtain-raiser on Saturday, UK asked readers whether they believed Joe Hart was good enough to stake a claim as permanent No.1 at Manchester City.

The readers have voted in numbers and 50.44 per cent believe that Hart has now shown he is good enough to hold down the starting jersey at Eastlands, and that Shay Given should leave the club if he is unhappy at being second choice.

However, 21.05% believe that given the nature of being a goalkeeper, City manager Roberto Mancini would do well to keep hold of Given in the event of Hart suffering a dip in form.

Whether the Irishman, who was a mainstay during his career at St. James Park with Newcastle United and during his first season at Eastlands, will be happy with a place as back-up remains to be seen.

However, 13.16% of readers still believe Given is the better goalkeeper out of the two and should be first-choice for Mancini, while 9.43% believe the gloveman should be given a chance to impress in goal too before the Italian coach makes his final decision.

Only 5.92% of readers thought the right thing to do would be to place Given as first-choice and sell Hart while the youngster is high in demand and worthy of a sizeable transfer fee.

If Hart wishes to confirm his position as England first-choice, the starlet will have to hold down his position at club level.

Although, having produced a superb display to deny Spurs victory on the new season's opening weekend, he has done himself no harm in the battle for a starting place. Whether he remains in the side will become clearer in the forthcoming weeks.
