Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t believe that Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie will be fit enough to feature in the Gunners' opening Premier League fixture against Liverpool, but will assess the pair on Friday.
Both players reached the World Cup final in South Africa this summer, and returned to pre-season training last week but didn’t take part in the club’s recent friendly against Legia Warsaw.
With the controversial set of international fixtures due to take place in midweek, the one piece of good news for Wenger is that Van Persie has been rested for Netherlands' friendly with Ukraine on Wednesday; with the Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk opting to choose just one player from his World Cup squad.
However, Fabregas who recently pledged his future to the club for another season at least, will be travelling to Mexico with the Spanish squad.
"They are a lot behind," Wenger told the club’s official website.
"Cesc goes to Mexico so he will not be able to practice. I will have to see how both are on Friday. But they are both short.
"Cesc comes back on Thursday night or Friday, so we’ll have to see. I hope Van Persie will have a good week of preparation, but I think he will be short as well."
