Manchester United Supporters Trust launch pre-season poster campaign against Glazer family
Latest step to oust American owners...
By Matt Monaghan
MUST came to forefront of the protests against the American family last season after it was revealed that club's debt stood at £734 million. Their 'Green and Gold' push saw supporters decked out in the colours of Newton Heath rather than the traditional red as they tried to force a change of ownership.
Despite the failure of the 'Red Knights' to wrestle control, the organisation has vowed to continue petitioning. The latest step is the launch of a 'New Season. Same Goal' campaign, which will see 48 prime locations decked with the slogan in the centre of Manchester.
This step comes as United launch their own poster campaign to publicise season ticket sales in the city centre after 4,000 went unsold this summer.
MUST chief executive Duncan Drasdo was sure the action would help show the Glazers they meant business.
He said: "This picks up where we left off last season and demonstrates our continuing commitment to helping bring about a change of ownership at United, for the benefit of the club and its loyal supporters."
"Of course during the summer months in early season matches fewer people tend to wear scarves of any colour but the reason the Green & Gold protest exploded last season has not gone away, and so neither has the strength of feeling amongst supporters.
"The Glazers are taking hundreds of millions of pounds out of the club. Every penny spent on tickets by supporters over their entire ownership period has been wasted on interest and other fees."
"The Red Knights have made their position clear that they won't pay an inflated price so the ball is in the Glazers' court and pressure is building on them. The excess demand for tickets has completely evaporated.
"Despite a price freeze and huge marketing campaign there are thousands of season tickets on open sale just days before the season kicks off and hospitality sales are understood to have been hit much harder. We hope they realise it is time for them to go."
