Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti believes that Manchester City are now in a position to challenge for top honours in the Premier League.

The Eastlands club had been in a difficult state with regard to their finances towards the end of the reign of previous owner Thaksin Shinawatra's, but the takeover by Sheikh Mansour in 2008 brought with it the kind of wealth that has allowed the club to flex its new financial muscle in the transfer market.

After spending heavily again this summer, the Blues boss now feels that the club is in position to mount a serious assault on the league title. But the Italian also made it clear that he is not envious of the riches at City, believing his own playing squad more than matches theirs.

"Manchester City has a possibility to fight for the title," Ancelotti told Sky Sports News.

"I’m not jealous - they needed to have top players. I think we have top players. We are not jealous."

In the meantime, Ancelotti also revealed that the line-up he will field on Wednesday against Hamburg will be the ones who will take to the pitch to contest the Community Shield against Manchester United.

"It is my thought to involve the players [against Hamburg on Wednesday] that will start against Manchester United [in the Community Shield on Sunday] and give them more minutes," he said.

"It is an important game, the last game of pre-season. We want to check our position physically and also tactically before start of season."

Chad Barton on Twitter: "Haha the top prediction for #MUFC vs #LFC on @GoalUK's website is #MUFC 0-9 #LFC, wouldn't mind a bit if that to be totally honest."

Go on, have a flutter. 50p. What could go wrong?*

*Don't.

Jay Duba is back with us on Twitter: "Newcastle's fairy-tale was over 3 months ago. NO WAY they can climb over my beloved Chelsea."

You say that, Jay, but the Magpies haven't plummeted down the table as some had expected when they finally dropped out of the Champions League places at the tail end of last year. Alan Pardew still seems to be getting the best out of his squad at the Sports Direct Arena.

Fran Stinchcombe agrees with me: "Newcastle have the best team spirit it would seem other than norwich and swansea, that alone could see them push into the top 4"

You may have read earlier that Ryan Giggs has signed yet another contract extension with Manchester United - I think you honestly have to wonder if he put pen to paper out of sheer habit at this stage - but it's good news for the club, says Javier Hernandez, who has hailed him as a "legend" (rightly so, of course).

The Mexican tyro has also got his eyes on winning the Red Devils a 20th league title. To see his thoughts, just click 'read more'.

Debanky on Twitter: "I hate to think even Tottenham will finish ahead of #Arsenal not to talk of Newcastle. A streak of wins needed urgently for Arsenal."

So far the vote is 3-1 towards laughing me out of the building on this one - but they laughed at Galileo too when he said that the earth orbits the sun ...

Well, if you fancy a bit of that, Phil Kitromilides has the lowdown on the value bets in that Tottenham - Newcastle game. Away win at 13/2, you say? Hmm ...

Phil, as a sensible man, went for another bet entirely in the end, but I've just got a bit of a feeling. Maybe Papiss Demba Cisse's brilliant goal last weekend has got me in too much of a flutter (geddit?).
