Liverpool legend John Aldridge: Gloom is lifting at Anfield after Fernando Torres' decision to commit future to club
Former Reds striker delighted with Spaniard's choice to stay put
By Matt Monaghan
Torres, 26, announced his determination to shun interest from Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City this afternoon after months of speculation. With the arrival of Joe Cole and a fresh takeover on the cards, the disappointment from finishing outside the Champions League qualifying places is ebbing away by the day.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds legend, who grabbed 50 goals in 83 First Division appearances, couldn't hide his excitement at the news.
"This is brilliant news and this is the latest in so many positive signs coming from the club in the last month or so," Aldridge said
"The doom and gloom is starting to lift, although we must be wary there is still a long way to go.
"But Torres saying he is staying at the club is great and it goes without saying how massively important he is to the side. With Stevie Gerrard staying with us and Joe Cole signing, we have so many creative options to make chances for Fernando to do what he does best.
"Fernando is imperative to this place and his words today will give all the other lads a lift and give everyone hope."
