Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson still needs a 'proper signing' at left-back - Mark Lawrenson

The Reds' left-back spot had looked bare following the agreement to sell Emiliano Insua to Fiorentina and the decision to release Fabio Aurelio. Added to this the fact that Andrea Dossena left for Napoli in January, and it was widely expected that the former Fulham boss would concentrate his efforts on landing a full-back during the remainder of the transfer window.
But the proposed deal with the Italian club concerning a move for Insua has since fallen through, while Aurelio recently re-signed with the club.
Lawrenson is delighted with the decision taken by both parties to prolong the former Valencia defender's career at Anfield, but maintains that the gaffer still needs a stronger signing to add more depth to the full-back position.
"We've all been wondering who’s going to be playing left-back for Liverpool next season then up pops our old friend Fabio Aurelio," he said in a column for the Liverpool Echo.
"The Brazilian actually ended up playing in Sunday’s friendly defeat in Moenchengladbach – as did Emiliano Insua whose proposed move to Fiorentina stalled over wage demands but I’d still expect new manager Roy Hodgson to go out and make what I’d call a 'proper signing' of a left-back."
Lawrenson also gave the boss a pat on the back for bringing back the Brazilian into the fold, despite the player's injury prone nature that proved to be detrimental to his career at Anfield in the first place.
"Hodgson’s not daft and I think that re-signing Aurelio is another sensible move from a man who is going about his business at Anfield in a very sensible manner," he said.
"It won’t have cost Hodgson anything to sign him and Aurelio will have been told that with the pay-as-you-play nature of his new deal then he’ll be on x amount when he’s in the team and x amount if he’s injured.
"I’m sure Aurelio will be delighted to have been offered another contract – it doesn’t sound like clubs have been hammering his door down with lucrative deals – and he knows the drill and knows the players at Liverpool.
"There have never been any question marks about his ability but he can never be relied upon to be anything close to an ever-present.
"Unfortunately Aurelio has got one of those bodies that always seems to struggle with injuries but when available he will always give you a good level of performance."
