Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov hopes that Steven Sidwell and Nigel Reo Coker remain at the club, amid increased transfer speculation that the pair are heading for the exit door at Villa Park.

Sidwell, a signing from Chelsea two years ago, has found regular first-team football difficult to find under Martin O'Neill, and is wanted by Fulham, whilst ex-West Ham United midfielder Reo-Coker is also desperate for some regular first-team football.

But Petrov says he enjoys playing with both his colleagues and is hopeful they will still be part of the Villa squad when the transfer window closes.

"They have shown that they've got a very good attitude," he told The Daily Star.

"Even when they weren't playing. Every time when the manager picked them to play they tried their best and he knows that.

"We would love them to stay because they're good players, but the manager has a different opinion.

"The manager is trying to bring in new faces and to let some people go.

"But even if we stay the way we are, we have still got a team to compete because every player in our team is a good player. Some people may leave and other people will come in.

"It's hard when you've played with somebody for three or four years and you've gone through a lot of hard work all that time to see them leaving, but that's the way football goes."

Oh my. It has emerged that Patrice Evra just looked to confront Luis Suarez in the tunnel, before Martin Skrtel blocked his path outside the Liverpool dressing room. That prompted a bit of pushing and shoving from both sets of players, and the big dogs - police, stewards, the full shebang - needed to intervene. It’s all kicking off now!

Greg Stobart reports from Old Trafford: “A lively if unspectacular half comes to an end as it started - with Luis Suarez at the centre of attention. The Uruguayan infuriated the United supporters and bench today by refusing to shake Patrice Evra’s hand before kick-off, and in the final seconds of the half he continued to cause trouble by smashing the ball into the crowd. His behaviour this afternoon really has been contemptible. On the pitch, United have edged the game after a bright start from the visitors. Paul Scholes, Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck have been particularly impressive. Scholes missed the best chance of the game when he headed straight at Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina but looks like the man to unlock the visitors’ defence after the break.”

“Tensions are rising” I said, didn’t I? For once, I was spot on. Luis Suarez has a little disagreement with Antonio Valencia as the referee blows for half-time, before players from both teams get involved as both sides head down the tunnel. A fuss about nothing, that incident, but the non-handshake row will continue to rumble on on the back pages tomorrow morning, no doubt.

Luis Suarez is absolutely fuming with the officials. The Uruguayan skips past Patrice Evra with ease around 40 yards out before looking to beat last-man Rio Ferdinand, who brushes the ankle of the striker as he wins his tackle to find keeper David de Gea. One minute of added time. Tensions are rising...
