Goal.com Debate: Is David Ngog good enough to lead the line for Liverpool in the absence of Fernando Torres?

How does the Frenchman measure up to other Premier League understudies?

David Ngog has given Liverpool lift-off in their Europa League campaign, and not for the first time. His double against FK Rabotnicki in Skopje last night tipped the balance for the Reds in an unfamiliar context, just as his late header against Unirea Urziceni at Anfield in February had assured a winning entry into Europe's second-tier club competition following Champions League elimination.

Given these crucial contributions and the extraordinary statistic that Liverpool have never lost when Ngog has scored (nine wins and a draw), you would think that the 21-year-old Frenchman is well on the way to being an Anfield crowd favourite; but the jury is still out.

Since arriving from formative club Paris Saint-Germain in 2008 for £1.5 million, he has made steady progress, but many doubt he is yet - or perhaps, will ever be - of sufficient quality to be Fernando Torres' stand-in.

Whether he can or can't do the job is crucial to Roy Hodgson's first season in charge. Torres' fitness concerns were never far from the minds of the Reds' followers this summer, as their talisman laboured his way through Spain's ultimately successful World Cup campaign; the Liverpool man was dropped to the bench for the semi-final and final.

That this is an ongoing problem is not lost on Torres himself, who recently publicly ruminated over whether he could, or should, put his body through another three or four years of Premier League football. He made just 24 Premier League appearances in 2008-09 (his absence arguably costing Liverpool the title) and only 22 last year, although he did crack 18 goals in that limited window.

Torres' difficulties brought Ngog to the fore in the last campaign. In fact, he ended up taking part in 24 Premier League games - two more than his illustrious senior colleague. He made important contributions too, scoring the clinching second goal against Manchester United at Anfield in October and opening the scoring in the December win against Wigan.

But this was a steep learning curve for a player who only played 18 league matches for PSG before moving across the Channel. There has clearly been some discussion within the club, as well as in the stands, over whether that curve has been too steep. Ngog has been linked with loan moves to West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United, and a number of striking targets have been mooted, including Twente's Bryan Ruiz and Nice's Loic Remy.

Hodgson has publicly insisted that Ngog is going nowhere, mindful of the fact that the size of transfer budget available is still unknown and he may well need the Frenchman. So how does Ngog's record compare to second (and third) choice strikers at Liverpool's rivals at the top end of the Premier League?

Wayne Veysey reports from Craven Cottage: “A good hand for debutant Pavel Pogrebnyak from the Fulham fans shortly before kick-off. He failed to acknowledge their applause, instead concentrating on a few stretching exercises, although perhaps his introduction was lost in translation. Anyway, we're off here.”

And before we turn our attention to the six 15:00 games, as promised, here are Greg Stobart’s player ratings from Old Trafford.

14:56 GMT
"Both sets of fans behaved very well, they've had a bit of banter," says Kenny Dalglish in an extremely awkward interview with Sky Sports. The Liverpool boss went on to claim that he had no idea Luis Suarez refused to shake Patrice Evra’s hand, adding that the reporter was "bang out of order" to blame the Uruguayan for anything that happened at Old Trafford today. More on that shortly.
14:54 GMT
Even more from Alex Fisher at the Reebok Stadium: “As we wait for the players to come out here at the Reebok the travelling Wigan fans have unfurled a banner with just the word 'BELIEVE' on it. Not sure if that's to inspire the players or just to remind them all is not lost!”
14:52 GMT
More from Alex Fisher at the Reebok Stadium: When it's as cold as it is today a visit to your local rivals is exactly what you want and here at the Reebok we've got a Lancashire derby with massive implications. Neither side have had a good season so far but the home side are showing signs of recovery, which probably explains their optimism. Paul, 45, from Westhoughton is a Wigan fan, he made the short journey from home to the Reebok this afternoon with dreams of a victory in his head. “This is a massive game, we need to win today and start getting ourselves closer to the rest of the bottom five,” he said. “We’re in danger of getting cut off from the rest so Martinez has to do something to turn it around. I’d play Hugo [Rodallega] but [Franco] Di Santo seems to be in favour at the moment. It’ll be close but I reckon we’ll nick it.” However Michael, 25, from Boothstown, disagrees (well he is a Bolton fan) and he thinks this will be a comfortable home win. “A couple of weeks ago we’d have probably lost today but we’re in better form now and I think we’ll win easily today, 3-1 to Bolton with Eagles getting at least two.”
